Happy J-Day!

Halloween is over. Soon it will be Thanksgiving (in the states), and then Christmas. But before we think about those things, please join me in celebrating one of the two biggest days in the Danish calendar, J-dag (J-Day in English). The 'J' is because this is the official day when Julebryg, or Christmas brew, will be available. At 8:59 this evening, to be exact. Yes, in a little under 2 hours from now, Danes will be able to forego drinking regular Carlsberg and Tuborg, and opt instead for the Christmas versions, which I've been told are heavier than the normal fare. They also have a higher alcohol content, explaining a lot about the Danish Christmas lunch (which I'll surely cover in a post of its own). Billboards and posters announcing the date have been up for a while now, so that no one need miss the opportunity for a first-day bottle out of ignorance. The only day that can even sort of match this is P-dag, which is when the Easter (påske) beer comes on the market.

It's hard for me to get too worked up over this day as I truly detest beer. Or, as I say to Danes (who tend to think that not liking beer is a sign of serious insanity), by not drinking beer, I am performing a social service, ensuring that there is more beer for others. So, it is up to you in the blogging world to help me give this day its true value. If you are a beer drinker, please have a beer, for me, and think of Christmas and 5 million drunken Danes. Thank you. I really appreciate it!

Hi, I did drink my share and your share of J dag beer..Oooh it is heavier than normal beer! I can confirm that given my headache this morning :) Thanks for your social service if only you could do the same for the gin drinkers ;) hug

Heh, you're cool :-) Never thought of making myself (I don't like beer either) useful this way :-)

Hi 'anonymous', and I hope your headache is better now. And after that dreadful gin 'n' tonic with no tonic I got the last time we went out, I predict I'll be providing a social service for the gin drinkers too for a while - yick! When all is said and done, gin really is only an excuse to drink more tonic. So, it will be the caipirinha drinkers' chance to be victims of my drinking habits for a while!

das kuschelblacki - Thanks, you're cool, too! In Accordance With The Prophecy. :-)

Chibithulhu does not drink...beer. Chibithulhu drinks Whiskey. and Drambuie, which is made with whiskey. Whiskey and the ground bones of cultists.

How cool. I luuuurv beer. I wonder if this stuff is sold outside of Denmark?

Chibithulhu - Hmmm...ground bones of cultists...I had no idea that the ground bones of cultists tasted like honey and herbs. Not necessarily surprised though.

No, actually I've never tried Drambuie, I don't think. Does it taste more like a whiskey or more like a liqueur?

Senhora Nova - Thor thinks that you can't get the Christmas stuff outside of Denmark...but that the Anchor Steam Christmas ale (the one that you buy by the magnum) is a really good substitute.

happy J-day!
I had my beer of course thanks to you: because you didn't have any.
however it was just regular beer.

Seasonal beer is really weird to me. When we lived in Berlin they had the same kind of products. I think the Germans refer to it as 'liquid bread'. I never had too much of a taste for it myself. Just the burnt Guinness stuff of Ireland once in a while. But I will have someone tip a glass for you!

Hi Chloe, thanks for having a beer for me. I appreciate it!

Daphnewood - thanks for getting a surrogate drinker to have a beer for me. And have you always liked Guiness, or did you have to acquire a taste for it? I've tried all variants on the stuff, and have decided I don't like any alcoholic beverage with malt. I'm perhaps the one person in history who went on the Guiness brewery tour, and then didn't bother to use the free beer coupons (in retrospect, I should have given them away to a fellow tour taker, but didn't think about it until later.)

Drambuie tastes more like liqueur than whiskey, a bit too sweet unless mixed with coffee or cultist-blood.

Chibithulhu thinks of five million drunken danes. the words "Beer-battered" are involved, and those little dipping bowls of sauce they have at your human restaurants.

kimananda sagde ...

Chibi dear - Yep, Danes should be beer-dipped...or marinaded in beer...or something with beer...they really like their beer. As for sauce, the traditional would be a basic brown sauce, but I would go more exotic, maybe something with ginger and lots of garlic.

chibithulhu agrees that a ginger-intenseive, asian-style dipping suace is best for danes.
