The true home of Santa Claus

In honor of Valentine's Day, a post about Christmas....

Real conversation, from our house, after my trip to Finland. For the geographically challenged among you, Lapland is way in the North of Finland, known to the world for extreme cold, and to the Finns as a ski holiday destination. For the chronologically challenged, Danes celebrate Christmas and exchange presents on the 24th, not the 25th.

Kimananda: Thor, I'm afraid I've learned something recently that will upset you. I've been told that Santa Claus really lives in Lapland.

Thor: Now, that...that is just evil...Finnish...propaganda. Everyone knows that Santa Claus lives in...

Kimananda, interrupting: ...yes, I know...he really lives in the North Pole.

Thor, pointing out of the room: Infidel! Out! Everyone knows he lives in Greenland.

Kimananda: So, if he lives in Greenland, then why is it that all American children send letters to Santa at the North Pole, and we get our presents that we've asked for.

Thor: No, that's just a c/o address. Santa knows that North America is a bit weird that way, so he lets you have your little false beliefs. Why else do you think you get your presents a day late there?

So, who's right? The Finns, the Americans, the Danes? To add to the confusion, I've been told that the Norwegians are convinced that he lives in Norway, and that the Swedes know that he lives in the North of Sweden. Does anyone else think anything else? For me, I'm leaning towards the Greenland option as part of my integration process.

chibithulhu has found proof that Valentine's Day is not a holiday of sappy human candy-exchange. It is a holiday of werewolves, whips, and bloodlust: http://www.fatemag.com/2006_02article2.html

All I know is that he winters in Florida after the holidays. He has a condo just down the street. We know it's him because there's a reindeer pulling his golfcart and and an elf keeps smearing him with lotion. They all fit right in, but you don't want to see Mrs. C in her bikini.

sorry to break this to you at the worst possible moment, but he lives in Canada and i know it because he replied to my son's letter and that's where it came from.

Foolish humans. It is true that the thing you call Santa once lived at the North Pole. THe magnetic North pole. the magnetic poles on this planet switch every aeon. The real home of your santa lies near the portal to Leng hidden amongst the Mountains of Madness on the continent you call Antartica

Santa lives inside your heart, no matterr where you are. Thanks for visiting my blog :-)

Thanks to you all, Hank, Chloe, Chibi. If I were a member of a Santa-appropriate religion, I could make some cheesy remark about how Santa lives everywhere, or how he lives in our hearts, or something. But as I'm not a Santa follower, I can dispense with the Hallmarky remarks! I'm still going for Greenland, but as I've said before, that's for cultural reasons.

Hi Morningdew, and thanks for the visit. Our posts must have crossed in the virtual world. :-)

Morningdew sagde ...

I think they did. I smiled readng that we actually used the same words. I guess that makes me cheesy? ;-)

kimananda sagde ...

Nope, you're not cheesy. Perhaps a bit scary, that you were able to comment on my comment so quickly. I'm impressed!

Morningdew sagde ...

That's easy: I happen to be online at the moment, that's why. Nothing to be scared about :-)

Just stopped by to say hi and nice blog!

Santa? I think he lives in the basement of our local department store, and they allow him to go up to the main floor the day after Thanksgiving.

I thought he hid out with Elvis somewhere in the off season?

I think Santa's so loaded, he has houses in all of those places. Why not?

If I were that rich with that many little people working for me, I'd live in multiple locations too. Keep the missus happy and keep the children guessing.

kimananda sagde ...

Dew, now I understand, and am not scared anymore! Wisdom is found! :-)

Connie and Leslie, I think you're both right about the multiple locations. But how does he afford to live in all of those places? I mean, his job is just giving things away. Perhaps he's proof of the old saying that all you give away will be returned ten-fold. Or maybe he just gets a cut from the toy companies!

MaryBishop, that's the most plausible one...how many people ever see Santa outside of a department store? But how can he live in your local store, when he clearly lives in mine?

Etchen - Santa road-tripping with Elvis. That could be cool!

True Blue Guy - you are very wise. His being omnipresent also explains how fast he can deliver presents the world over. ;-)

Santa lives in the North Pole. We got letters with the post mark and everything. But that foreign maroonish looking one might live in Greenland. You know the one that likes you to leave carrots and straw in your wooden shoes for the reindeer? I think there are 3 santas total that are brothers. Like Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Okay I might have just mixed roman/greek names but oh well. I had them the same semester ;)

I yell you again, santa's true home is at what was once the magentic north pole on the continent you call Antartica, mortal! He lives amdist the mountains of Madness, for what sane being would let that many elves into their home? Besides, reindeer smell.

kimananda sagde ...

Hi Daphnewood, you may be right...there may be different Santas for the different areas of the world. That way, everyone is right....

Even you, Chibi! If I weren't madly trying to integrate into Danish cultural mode, then I would surely accept your view. As it is, I think it is highly plausible... but I'm not really sure how (or if) Santa Claus fits into the mythos....

kimananda sagde ...

Mr. American, the turks? Is there an Islamic Santa?

Helen, very true, very true. But where is the proof?
