How to deal with difficult questions

Thor's Dad once signed himself up for ten lessons of Italian cooking. At the first lesson, a very well-presented woman (WPW) started talking to him, and pointing out others in the class whom she already knew, presenting them by title...

WPW (in a conspiratorial whisper): That man over there is the director of (blah blah) and the man in the blue shirt is vice-president of (blah blah)...

Thor's Dad could see where this was going, that sooner or later she would want to hear all about his status level, which made him (egalitarian Dane to the core) a bit uncomfortable. Eventually it happened:

WPW: And, what do you do?

Thor's Dad: I own a small business in Buenos Aires.

WPW (looking impressed): Oh! What kind of business is it?

Thor's Dad: Well, we have 30 or 40 young girls....

At this point, the well-presented woman became very alarmed, and changed the subject. Thor's Dad decided to forego the rest of the cooking lessons, as the clientele was clearly several notches above what he was into.

In the interest of avoiding any libel charges, I must inform you that Thor's Dad works in some sort of management position in one of Denmark's largest companies. As far as I know, he does not actually own any brothels, in Argentina or elsewhere. Furthermore, he is an excellent cook.

Thor's Dad did the right thing. Sounds like a wiseguy.

Oh, I linked to you. Hope you don't mind.

some of the difficult questions that I have faced are more like .. in an interview "what are your three weaknesses" .. they are more of a stupid question actually ..

"My greatest weakeness is chocolate"

And then many asks .. well .. they give you a bag and tell you to put two things that describe you in this bag .. well I'll put a Jack Daniels and a Gun ..

How brilliant is Thor's Dad? VERY! "Well, I have 30 to 40 young girls" is how I'm going to handle all my difficult questions from now on. Questions from the dentist, our building manager, my girlfriend - EVERYONE.

lol! I just knew she was going to change the subject! lol! He started it out like that on purpose?! Whatever, well done!

This reminds me of the one tuition I ever took for english lit. The teacher was described to me as someone who "makes laureates" so all his pupils were from star schools and I was not, by mauritian standards! He ipresents all the pupils to me by name and school name and whem he gets to me he says "This is Fitèna, she's from Ivory Coast! (instead of mentionning the school name).

I was so mad!

I love Thor's Dad's comment!

Once at a party, someone asked me where I worked. I said I stayed home and raised my children. She said: Wow, what do you do all day with all that time? I said: Nothing, I do nothing all day long. She said: Aren't you bored out of your mind? I said no, not at all. I watch a lot of television. (I gave her the answers she wanted to hear.)

Mr. American, Thor's Dad is cool, and very, very funny. I'll give him your high five next time I see him.

Jackt, don't nannies work in brothels?!

Greg, it was the funny thing to do, anyway. And thanks for the link!

Sangroncito, sorry to disappoint you like that.

Nabeel, those are the worst questions. I'm convinced that there are no right answers, either.

Roro, glad I could help!

Maddy, that is a fabulous quote. Makes me want to go to cooking school just to try it out.

Fitena, how annoying for you! What did you say?

HB, ja, det var det! Thorsfar er rigtig morsom.

Mary, I cannot even imagine someone thinking it would be boring to raise kids. I don't have any of my own, but after a day visiting friends who have kids, I am ready to sleep for a week...I can't imagine how tiring it must be to do it all the time. Rewarding, satisfying...and exhausting.

Great answer for the question. I hate it when people use their status. Sounds like he did the right thing :)

and I thought women like that only hung out at PTA meetings. Way to go Father O' Thor!

Thor's dad rocks the house. he seems to have the same sense of humor as my dad and I, which is to say a little twisted and largely used as a tool for punishing the wicked.

i've no idea who they are, but i would love to sit and have dinner with characters named Thor and a Well Presented Woman

LOL

PS: I got a bulgarian friend here, avid biker. are you as crazy as they are?

Vanessa sagde ...

I certainly hope I can remember that response the next time I'm asked a difficult question.

i like Thor's dad. I am going to keep his answer in mind. I go to lots of interviews so this is going to be fun.

BTW I want to eat that food in the picture.

kimananda sagde ...

Jack, that's exactly it...a hippie Dane.

Nikki-Ann, I normally think that people who really have status don't need to show it off.

Connie, yes, you're right!

Daphnewood, remind me never to go to a PTA meeting then! And, about the food...it is a photo from Thor's mother's 60th birthday party...it was catered with a Tuscan buffet, and it was fabulous. Which was good, as we got to eat it 3 days in a row (the party, and then a party the next day to eat the leftovers, and then more leftovers taken home).

Morose, Thor's whole family is like that, and so is Thor. It makes life far more interesting.

Treespotter...crazy? Us?

Vanessa, it is a good one, isn't it.

Blue, I think it's the same when the subject turns to cute boys.

Chloe, let us know what the reaction is!

Day, thanks!

I said nothing! :-( He being a teacher and all and doing me a favour by taking me into his class when I actually was paying him... I preferred smiling and letting go!

kimananda sagde ...

Oh, no! But it's good you didn't let yourself get too angry about it.

Attila the Mom sagde ...

hahaha! Too funny! Thor's dad sounds like a hoot!

kimananda sagde ...

He is very, very funny, yes. Actually the whole family is funny.

Hi, cool response from Thor's dad. if I could keep a straight face I should try that as I hate being assessed as some merchandise in a store. Interpreter's get mixed evaluations anyway!
hugs

Hugs back to you, 'anonymous'! :-)
